So personally I don’t think you can have to many magazines in your home. However when it comes to the number of magazines for practicing shooting, bugging out and chest rig/carrier I think there is pretty general numbers most people agree on. 1. For a firearm that is your every day carry I believe you should have at lest 4-6 magazines. Depending on the firearm and capacity you are going to have 1 in the firearms and 1-2 backup magazines on you as well. The other 2-3 magazines would be used as range magazine. With currently ammo prices I don’t think anyone is going to the range or a shooting course practicing with hundreds or thousand of rounds at a time using self defense rounds. With that being said do you want to unload your magazine every time you go to the range just to reload them to continue using your carry rounds? 2. For a bug out situation it probably comes down to what you have as a plan in place. A 9mm Glock mag for the 45 full loaded weights around half a pound. If moving by foot that weight is going to add up fast so does a ammo can with 50 magazines in it make much sense? If you plan on bugging in place and driving to a set location then obviously your weight factor changes a lot. Ideally you’d probably want to have at lest the same number of magazines to bug out with as you would on your chest rig which most people carry 1 in your firearm 1-2 on your rig and maybe 1 on your belt to accompany the 6-8 rifles magazines you are carrying. If you are a man you has a carbine instead of a rifle and it also take Glock magazines then you of course could change all this around and have 8-12 Glock magazines. 3. When it comes to a plate carrier or chest rig you are obviously limited to your gear. It seems like most people will carry 6-8 rifle makes on their kit and 1 in the firearm with 1-2 pistol magazines in their kit and 1 in the firearm. Personally I don’t have a plate carrier in my truck 24/7 as space wise it’s not very realistic and I’m often not far from home on my daily business so all that would get grabbed anyways in the shtf situation after a quick stop home. On the daily I have a Haley strategic micro D3CRM with 4 magazines in the main pouches but you could go up to 6 if that’s your preference with 1 in the firearm. I have no rifle magazine on hand in my daily truck kit or a rifle/carbine. My usual carry is a sig 365 XL right now that I am enjoying a lot, with a 12 round mag in the firearm and 4 extended 15 round mags on my micro that leaves me with 72 rounds. I am of the mindset those 72 rounds are to help me remove myself from any situation and get back home to the rest of my supplies and wife more so then resolve whatever problem is currently going on. This is just my personal thoughts and what I’ve gathered from my time reading, watching videos and playing around with my setups. It of course could be 100% wrong and there could be a way better way going about things so hopefully others chime in to validate what I said or tear it apart 😅.
